287G not coming to Ottumwa

(OTTUMWA) Opponents of the controversial 287 G program have a reason to celebrate tonight.

The program that would have allowed local police to start the process of deporting an undocumented person arrested for a violent crime will not be coming to Ottumwa.

KTVO has learned that the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency or "ICE" can only fund three communities nationwide for that program and the City of Bridges will not be one of them.

You may recall earlier this year when police chief Jim Clark proposed the program to the city council he met with widespread opposition from the community.

Wednesday he says he's frustrated with lawmakers in Washington.

"That's poor planning on the part of Congress that's poor effort on their part to fund this program," said Clark.

Ottumwa was not the only Iowa community turned down by ICE.

Marshalltown, Iowa also applied and was denied.
