29 Members of Congress Ask Condi to Deny Dog Extradition

29 Members of Congress Call on Condoleezza Rice to Deny Extradition of “Dog” – The Bounty Hunter

(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Representative Tom Tancredo (R-CO) along with 28 members of Congress recently sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, asking her to deny the extraction of Duane “Dog” Chapman to Mexico for bringing Max Factor heir/convicted serial rapist Andrew Luster to justice.

“Thanks to Mr. Chapman, Luster is now serving a 124-year sentence,” said Tancredo, Chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus. “It seems that Mexican authorities are pressing this case only because they are so stung by the embarrassment of failing where Mr. Chapman succeeded.”

In 2003, bounty hunter Chapman received a tip regarding the whereabouts of Andrew Luster, the Max Factor heir who disappeared during his trial for rape. Chapman went to Mexico to act on this tip, and was accompanied by a local Mexican police officer – who he agreed to pay. He was also in communication with U.S. officials, who were aware of his activities.

Chapman successfully located Luster and apprehended him. When he arrived at the jail to book Luster, however, Chapman’s police escort was nowhere to be found. As a result, Chapman was detained for several days on a “deprivation of freedom charge” – a minor offense – and a “conspiracy” charge, which was originally dismissed by Judge Pineda (this latter charge is the crux of the extradition order because it is the only offense that Chapman has been charged with that allows him to be extradited under the treaty with Mexico - which requires the charge to carry with it at least a one-year sentence). Chapman then returned to the U.S. after posting bail.

Members who signed the letter include:

Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), Rep. John Boozman (R-AR), Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX), Rep. Nathan Deal (R-GA), Rep. John Duncan (R-TN), Rep. Joel Hefley (R-CO), Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA), Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA), Rep. John Sullivan (R-OK), Rep. John Hostettler (R-IN), Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX), Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), Rep. Steve Chabot (R-OH), Rep. Charles Taylor (R-NC), Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), Rep. Charlie Norwood (R-GA), Rep. Gil Gutknecht (R-MN), Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL), Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN), Rep. Members Of Congress Ask Condoleezza Rice To Keep Bounty Hunt

HONOLULU (AP) -- Twenty-nine congressmen have sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asking her to deny the extradition of Duane "Dog" Chapman to Mexico, where he faces charges of illegal detention and conspiracy.

Chapman, who is the star of the popular TV show "Dog The Bounty Hunter," was arrested last month along with two of his co-stars after his capture of fugitive convicted rapist Andrew Luster, the Max Factor heir, on June 18, 2003, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Chapman was released on $300,000 bail the next day. He must attend extradition hearings to face trial in Mexico, where bounty hunting is considered a crime.

"It seems that Mexican authorities are pressing this case only because they are so stung by the embarrassment of failing where Mr. Chapman succeeded," Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, said in the Sept. 26 dated letter signed by 28 other congressmen.

Chapman's capture of Luster, who had fled the country during his trial on charges he raped three women, catapulted the 53-year-old bounty hunter to fame and led to the Hawaii-based reality series on A&E. Luster is now serving a 124-year prison term.

So out of 435 congressman, only 29 of them have the guts to stand up for this fine American citizen. Are these people out of touch or what? Yet none from his home state. Yet when some illegal thumbs her nose at our laws and holes herself up in a fake church, you get all kinds of congressman to come out of the woodworks. These do nothings should be ashamed of themselves.
