Man gets 20-year sentence for murder

ATHENS -- A man who pleaded guilty to murder in the stabbing death of his wife at a mobile home in the Tanner community has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

District Attorney Kristi Valls said Fernando Nolasco Mendez, 42, accepted a plea bargain in circuit court Monday.

Valls said Mendez will be deported to Mexico when he is released from prison because he is an illegal immigrant.

According to sheriff's department reports, Mendez stabbed his wife, Macaria Archundie Martinez, 28, with a kitchen knife at their home in Swan Creek Trailer Park off U.S. 31 on March 13, 2005. Archundie had defensive wounds on her hands and a stab wound to her chest.
