The American Legion Opposes Passage of DREAM Act

Because the DREAM Act proposed by Congress would provide amnesty to the children of illegal immigrants, displace American citizens in the limited college classrooms throughout our country and give these "conditional non-immigrants" an opportunity for federal financial aid, The American Legion announced today it strongly opposes passage of the bill.

"By resolution, our membership is strongly opposed to illegal immigration into this country," said Jimmie Foster, the Legion's national commander.

"We do not understand why so many members of Congress feel compelled to provide for amnesty for a portion of illegal immigrants before securing America's borders and tackling the broken immigration system."

"Our states and communities are struggling to meet the needs of tomorrow's generation forcing increased tuitions and fees on those already attending.

So why is Congress putting even more pressure on the universities and colleges by pushing these children into America's already crowded classrooms?" Foster said.

The American Legion calls upon Congress to finally address the overall immigration problem.

"Both parties have been guilty of allowing this problem to fester way too long," Foster said.

"Action upon the DREAM Act, a stop-gap piece of legislation that deals with one symptom of the problem, does not address the underlying issues such as employment, pathways to citizenship, and securing America's borders."

The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2010 was passed Dec. 8 by the House of Representatives.

The bill would grant "conditional non-immigrant status" to those who entered the U.S. illegally before their 16th birthday and have been here for at least five years.

They must be persons "of good moral character" who are not deportable under the Immigration and Nationality Act, and have to be younger than 30 when the DREAM Act is passed.

To qualify for the bill's provisions, illegal immigrants must also satisfy one of the following requirements: have a high school diploma, be enrolled in a college or university, or be a service member for at least two years.

Under the new legislation, conditional non-immigrant status would be granted to those who qualified for five years and could be extended another five years.

In this status, they would be eligible for student loans and federal work-study grants.

Upon earning a college degree, or after serving two years in the military, they could then apply for permanent residence.

The American Legion objects to the use of military service as a pathway to citizenship.

"No public policy reason exists that would justify the acceptance of illegal immigrants into America's armed forces," said Peter Gaytan, executive director of The American Legion in Washington.

"Over 30,000 non-citizens are members of our military, why do we need further to incentivize service when our military continues to meet recruitment and retention goals?"

"Every parent wants the best opportunities for their child, yet the DREAM Act forces U.S. citizens to provide opportunities for the children of those who entered the country illegally at the same level of our own citizens," said Tim Tetz, legislative director of The American Legion.

"It is very unfair the American taxpayers would be forced to subsidize the education of children of illegal aliens," he concluded.

Friends of ALIPAC,

The latest information we have indicates that the US Senate may be within one vote of passing cloture for Dream Amnesty!

Furthermore, we have told the media and lawmakers that the Dream Act is a much broader Amnesty than anyone expects, due to the fact that there is no verification of the age of the applicant, the age the applicant entered the US, or the time an illegal alien has been in the US.

The bill also contains this line allowing Janet Napolitano to arbitrarily waive any and all provisions and grant mass Amnesty to about every illegal alien in America if she or her successor wants to.

"(2) WAIVER- With respect to any benefit under this Act, the Secretary of Homeland Security may waive the ground of inadmissibility under paragraph (1), (4), or (6) of section 212(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1182(a)) and the ground of deportability under paragraph (1) of section 237(a) of that Act (8 U.S.C. 1227(a)) for humanitarian purposes or family unity or when it is otherwise in the public interest."

YOU MUST ACT NOW AMERICA. YOU MUST AWAKEN AND START BOMBARDING THE SENATE WITH CALLS OPPOSING THE DREAM ACT. YOU MUST NOT STOP UNTIL THE SENATE EITHER DEFEATS DREAM OR LEAVES FOR THE HOLIDAYS.

Take Action with these steps.

Step 1: Prepare yourself to fight right up until, and through Christmas Eve if necessary. ALIPAC and our allies in DC are making those plans, as the Democratic leadership may decide to deliver Dream Amnesty on Christmas Eve in order to minimize public attention and backlash.

Step 2: Galvanize your resolve to do as much as possible to stop the Dream Amnesty and to rally others online and around you to help. You must all be Paul Reveres. You must be the media because the media is not responding to us right now.

Step 3: Help us challenge and bypass the media road blocks! Major news conduits we rely on are NOT reporting that the Dream Amnesty passage could be imminent or the negative consequences of the bill. Even worse, many sources (like Sean Hannity and several Fox News guests) are telling you not to worry about a thing and to just relax because Dream Amnesty won't pass.)

We need you pounding these sources with calls and emails saying, "The US Senate is within 1 vote of passing mass Amnesty for illegal aliens any day now and I can't believe you are barely covering this story! Please warn Americans that millions of illegal aliens could receive amnesty before Christmas if passed in the Senate!"

You can access a full list of media targets that need your attention and you can work on your own local media, favorite blogs, and favorite talk radio shows. Right now Fox News and Drudge Report are taking a dive on this and even sites like World Net Daily need to respond more than what we are seeing.

In our opinion, the only thing that can stop Dream Amnesty from passing is a massive public political outcry against the bill and right now THAT IS NOT HAPPENING.
