ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Homeland Security Investigations agents have raided the homes of a Rio Rancho man and four Albuquerque residents in connection with a South Carolina-based scheme aimed at illegally obtaining New Mexico driver's licenses.
The five New Mexico residents were among 30 individuals named in federal indictments unsealed Tuesday.
According to the indictments, defendants used fake utility bills to get New Mexico driver's licenses.
The state is one of two that allows illegal immigrants to obtain a driver's license.
Authorities say the suspects were in the U.S. illegally and traveled to New Mexico to apply for the licenses.
Among those indicted were Albuquerque residents 31-year-old Ivon Baray-Luna; 47-year-old Alfred Padilla; 25-year-old Victor Alvarez; 42-year-old Elizabeth "La Guera" Lopez; and 39-year-old Rio Rancho resident Alfredo Saenz.
It was unclear if any had attorneys.
