HIDALGO - Officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge have called for backup. This is after learning a large group of immigrants from Central America was going to attempt to seek political asylum in the U.S.

We're told extra Border Patrol agents, McAllen police, Hidalgo police and Hidalgo County's sheriff deputies are at the bridge right now.

CBP Supervisor and Public Affairs Liaison Phil Barrera said the Central American group, which numbers anywhere from 300 to possibly 1,000, is now in Reynosa. We're told the group made a stop at religious shelter at this hour. There's no word about when they plan to cross into the U.S.

Operations at the Hidalgo International Bridge are running normally at this hour. CHANNEL 5 NEWS has a crew at the bridge. We'll stay on top of this story and bring you the very latest details.
