NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Davidson County Sheriff's Deputy was recovering Monday after a suspected drunk driver crashed into him.

Michael True was driving a Sheriff's Department van on July 14th when police said Luis Ortiz-Brito crossed the center line and hit him head on.

Both men were treated at local hospitals, then Ortiz-Brito was booked in the Davidson County Detention Center on charges of DUI and Driving Without a License.

Sheriff Daron Hall said under the 287G program, all inmates booked into the jail automatically have their immigration status checked. Hall said the suspect in this case was an illegal immigrant.

"We're lucky that our employee is alive and I hope that the process works and this individual won't be released on to the streets of Nashville to once again put us at risk," Sheriff Hall said.

Ortiz-Brtio could be deported.

Meanwhile, Michael True hasn't been able to return to work.

The 287G program started in Nashville in 2007. Since then, some 9,000 illegal immigrants have been processed for deportation.
