40 custodians out after audit
By BAILEY SHIFFLER
Forty members of the Mansfield Independent School District’s custodial staff have resigned or been terminated because of a recent internal Social Security number audit, the district’s director of communications said.
Terry Morawski, director of communications, said the district began the audit in August after a report was made by a district employee that indicated some of the custodial staff might not be using proper Social Security numbers. One hundred and twenty custodial staff members’ Social Security numbers were processed in two 90-day waves, he said.
Of the employees audited, 40—all of which were Hispanic—have either been terminated or chose to resign, Morawski said. Since then, all of the positions have been filled except for one, Morawski said. There are 265 custodial employees, and the MISD Personnel Department plans to review the remaining staff members by the end of May, Morawski said in an e-mail.
Morawski said when a number was identified as being improper, the employee was notified and had 90 days to produce a valid number.
Morawski said by law the school district is not allowed to verify Social Security numbers before hiring. He said as part of the assessment, the district is evaluating its process of reviewing Social Security numbers and other employee information.
All district employees do undergo a background check, Morawski said, which is done through fingerprinting.
Jeff Brogden, director of facilities and operations, said the process has been very organized, but that it has been heartbreaking to see some longtime employees leave the district.
"We’re sad about the situation," Brogden said. "It’s very difficult."
He said all of the employees who have left have been marked "eligible for rehire," which means that if they do obtain a valid Social Security number they will be able to work for the district again if positions open.
Brogden said training the influx of new custodial staff to replace the 40 who have left has been a challenge, but service at the schools has not been disrupted.

Great influence on the kids, huh? The moron who made this statement or deemed them eligible for rehire better be glad my kids aren't attending that pathetic exuse for a school.
