Convicted felon sent to prison for illegal reentry to US

A Mexican citizen who was convicted numerous times in Wisconsin was sentenced to almost four years in federal prison for illegally reentering the country after having been deported.

Rolando Reyes-Cruz, 49, was sentenced to 46 months in prison by U.S. District Judge James Peterson in federal court in Madison on Wednesday. He pleaded guilty on May 5.

He was found in New Lisbon by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Reyes-Cruz first came to America illegally when he was 14, and had been deported four times since then.

His convictions include burglary, battery, hit and run, a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of cocaine and ID theft, as well as an illegal reentry conviction in 2007.

Peterson said he recognized Reyes-Cruz wanting to return to Wisconsin to see his children, but the judge said it was his duty to protect the public from the defendant's criminal activity.
