Five face prison for shuttling immigrant prostitutes to N.C.
The Associated Press
Five men have been sent to prison after pleading guilty to charges of shuttling illegal immigrant prostitutes into North Carolina, authorities said.
The men were caught a year ago trading prostitutes for money at a Greensboro-area Home Depot parking lot. Federal authorities say Greensboro was a regular exchange point in the smuggling network that stretched from New York to Georgia.
"It was the first time we were able to link a group bringing them out of state," Ken Burkhart, a supervisor with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Charlotte, said this week.
Jesus Armenta-Martinez, Severiano Juan Gonzalez-Luna and Priciliano Mora-Bueno, all of New York City, and Javier Chay-de La Cruz and Belter Lopez-Hernandez, both from the Charlotte area, pleaded guilty to driving prostitutes across state lines and transporting illegal immigrants for gain.
U.S. District Judge William Osteen last Friday sentenced Lopez-Hernandez, 27, to a year and two months in prison. In March, Osteen sentenced Armenta-Martinez, 34, to two years and a month. Gonzalez-Luna, 29, received a year and a half.
Mora-Bueno, 27, received a year and nine months and Chay-de La Cruz, 34, received a year and two months.
Burkhart said the bust isn't likely to severely curtail prostitution in North Carolina, but, he added, "this organization took a big hit."
