5 Mexican workers in Bangor jail
Saturday, August 05, 2006 - Bangor Daily News

Five Mexican migrant workers presumed to be illegal immigrants were arrested this week in Ellsworth and are being held at Penobscot County Jail in Bangor pending hearings.

The five: Roman Gonzales-Lopez, 22, Lucio Medina Montoya, 33, Javier Santo-Javier, 29, Freddy Juarez-Salas, 18, and Francisca Ortega-Robles, 19, initially were stopped in Ellsworth on Wednesday evening.

Police pulled over their van because it had no license plates, according to Ellsworth police Lt. Harold Page. When none of the passengers spoke fluent English, local police called immigration officials, who arrested all five and took them to Bangor.

Paula Grenier, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Immigration and Customs enforcement department, said the Mexicans would be held until a hearing, at which point each could be deported.

The five reportedly were staying in Columbia in Washington County, but Grenier wasn't sure what kind of work they were doing.

Three of the five workers had the same address in Columbia. The other two were listed as transients, according to the Penobscot County Jail log.

Grenier said hearing dates hadn't been set.

Very telling about the scope of this whole illegal immigration debacle when Maine is also experiencing problems.

If they can lock them up in Bangor, they should be able to lock them up everywhere if they'd just get off their arses and do it.
