5 percent of Mexicans rely on U.S. income
PRINCETON, N.J., April 4 (UPI) -- As many as 20 million Mexicans, or 5 percent of the country, rely on money from relatives working in the United States, a Gallup report said Tuesday.

The report came as lawmakers battled over immigration reform, even within the ranks of the Republican Party, where some want a fence built along the Mexican border, and U.S. President George Bush advocating a guest worker program.

The Gallup report said of about 1,000 Mexicans polled in December, 32 percent said they had relatives living outside the country, with 15 percent saying they receive monthly cash aid from such relatives.

Figures from the Pew Hispanic Center show unauthorized migrants make up about 5 percent of the U.S. labor force, including 24 percent of all workers employed in U.S. farming occupations, 17 percent in cleaning jobs and 14 percent in construction.
