Local law enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard are searching for suspects linked to a human smuggling operation, which on Monday morning brought 28 Cuban nationals to Upper Captiva Island.
The refugees included 14 adult men, 11 adult women, a juvenile girl and two juvenile boys. Only one refugee needed medical treatment. An adult man had high blood pressure and was transported to the Coast Guard infirmary.
A possible refueling vessel is being sought, said Lazaro Guzman, a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol supervisory agent.
“Right now, local law enforcement and the Coast Guard are trying to see if anybody out there can be linked to this smuggling event,â€Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote!
