As many as 40 people were taken into custody Saturday after Maricopa County Sheriff's detectives broke up a cockfight in the West Valley, authorities said.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Animal Cruelty Unit arrived at a property near Wintersburg and Baseline roads, near Tonopah, after a report of an organized cockfighting event, said Sheriff's spokeswoman Lindsey Smith.

When detectives arrived, a cockfight was in progress. Smith said many of the adults were watching and numerous roosters were found caged in parked vehicles.

Between 30 and 40 individuals were taken into custody to be interviewed. The majority are suspected to be illegal immigrants, Smith said.

The suspects face misdemeanor charges of facilitation of cockfighting and cockfight spectator.

La Raza fought and won for these people to keep these fighting cocks in residential areas even though the rest of the population is not allowed to keep laying hens in those same areas. They won because of the cultural sensitivity issue. They said that this activity is part of their culture and were persuasive enough to win. They would not help us to keep our laying hens though because we are not both racially qualified for their help. Wish we could have follow up as to what really happens legally. I suspect that once again La Raza will come in and save the day for these people and the news will never breathe a word of it.

Police: Cockfighting bust leads to weapons, drugs

A search by Maricopa County Sheriff's investigators into cockfighting in the West Valley on Saturday recovered drugs, weapons and cash, officials said Sunday.

MCSO deputies carried out a search warrant at Wintersburg and Baseline roads, near Tonopah, after they discovered an organized cockfighting event.

The search resulted in the arrest of 69 people into Fourth Avenue Jail on suspicion of being present at a cockfight, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor. Of those arrested, 20 were suspected illegal immigrants, the sheriff's office said.

Some of those arrested were wanted on outstanding warrants.

Investigators also towed 36 vehicles from the scene and recovered an unspecified number of weapons, drugs and cash, the sheriff's office said.

MCSO Animal Cruelty Unit investigators were called to the scene as a cockfight was in progress and several people watched, Sheriff's spokesman Lindsey Smith said Saturday. Numerous roosters were reportedly found caged in parked vehicles.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson signed a bill lat year making cockfighting illegal in New Mexico, leaving Lousiana as the only state where it is legally allowed in the U.S.. How was La Raza able to get around the state law prohibiting keeping these birds? Have you considered bringing this to the attention of the U.S. Humane Society or SPCA (to which the birds confiscated at cock fights are always given by the police to be euthanized, since they are too aggressive to be used for any purpose other than fighting) and/or with P.E.T.A.?

I thought perhaps P.E.T.A., which itself sometimes uses methods bordering on terrorism to promote its animal welfare agenda, might be a match for them.
