ASHEBORO, N.C. -- North Carolina officials have charged seven men with animal cruelty, seized 400 chickens in cockfighting bust.

The Randolph County Sheriff's Office said the men also were charged Saturday with felony cockfighting after a raid of U.S. Highway 64.

Officers found 24 gaming roosters, three of which were dead from injuries sustained while fighting. Investigators also seized 400 chickens that were found to be living in deplorable conditions.

Sheriff cites 85 in Upstate Greenville County sheriff's deputies have cited 85 people for cockfighting and seized nearly $16,000 in what they described Monday as the largest operation of its kind in the county in years.
Ten of those were also charged with unlawful gambling, deputies said.
All but about a dozen of the 145 birds seized from 20 Hades Hill Road on Sunday have been euthanized, according to Lt. Shea Smith.

Six of the men were being held by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for possible deportation.
