7 Mexicans caught attempting to enter U.S. illegally by boat

Seven Mexican nationals caught attempting to enter U.S. illegally by boat

    August 30, 2010 | 4:12 pm

Five women and two men -- all Mexican nationals -- were caught aboard an 18-foot Chris Craft Cavalier trying to enter the U.S. illegally, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Monday.

The incident, which occurred Sunday afternoon about three miles off San Diego's Point Loma, is just the latest in a trend of smugglers using boats instead of overland routes.

Since Oct.1, there have been 93 seizures of boats and 745 suspected illegal immigrants apprehended, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. In the 12 months before Oct. 1, there were 49 seizures and 400-plus people apprehended.

The seven apprehended Sunday ranged in age from 22 to 56. They were taken to a Border Patrol station for possible processing back to Mexico, unless they have outstanding warrants in the United States.

Glad they got caught. There were five women on the boat. That means at least 50 anchor babies.

CBP Thwarts Human Smuggling Attempt at Sea

    (Monday, August 30, 2010)

San Diego — The crew of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) marine interdiction vessel stopped a human smuggling attempt off the coast of San Diego netting seven illegal aliens on Sunday afternoon.

A CBP maritime crew comprised of CBP marine interdiction agents and CBP officers, were on routine patrol about three miles off the coast of Point Loma at around 5 p.m., when they spotted a vessel of interest and proceeded to investigate.

The CBP crew encountered the vessel, a red and white 18-foot Chris Craft Cavalier, with seven individuals on board, five females and two males, all with no identification.

U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Coastal Border Enforcement Team (CBET) met the CBP crew at the CBP Dock on Shelter Island in San Diego Harbor to determine the people’s citizenship.

Border Patrol agents determined the seven people were citizens of Mexico attempting to illegally enter the United States. Their ages ranged from 22 to 56-years-old. All were transported to a Border Patrol Station for processing.

An investigation is being conducted to identify and prosecute the individuals responsible for this smuggling attempt. CBP seized the vessel.

The interdiction was part of a coordinated effort by member agencies of the San Diego Maritime Unified Command. The San Diego Maritime Unified Command, comprised of CBP, ICE, the Coast Guard, and other law enforcement partners, is an all-threats multi-agency approach to maritime law enforcement operating in the San Diego and Orange County maritime region.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
