BROOKS COUNTY (Kiii News) -

Nearly 70 illegal immigrants bailed out of a U-Haul trailer after being spotted on Highway 285, in what is being called the largest illegal immigrant bust to ever happen in Brooks County.

It happened just west of Falfurrias, where a Brooks County Sheriff's Department deputy spotted the truck in a location that is known for smuggling activity. He actually saw people climbing about the U-Haul.

More than 50 illegal immigrants were captured, and some 20 others are still on the loose.

A U-Haul packed with at least 71 undocumented immigrants was discovered by law enforcement officers in South Texas.

The incident happened Wednesday, along FM 285 in Brooks County, about 15 miles from Falfurrias, Texas.

The city is located 70 miles north of the Rio Grande.

This area is the "heaviest area of alien and narcotic traffic," according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection's website.

During the traffic stop, a few individuals escaped into the surrounding brush.

The smuggled individuals were all taken into custody, according to Brooks County deputies.
