WASHINGTON — U.S. authorities capped a nearly two-year campaign against one of Mexico's most violent drug cartels with 52 arrests Wednesday, and said they had crippled its U.S. distribution network.

48 arrested in U.S. raid on Mexican drug cartel

The arrests in California, Minnesota and Maryland are part of a multi-agency operation targeting the Sinaloa Cartel. The number of arrests in now up to 751.

Reporting from Washington -- Federal authorities said today that they have arrested 48 people in California, Minnesota and Maryland as part of a 21-month investigation targeting the Sinaloa Cartel, a Mexican drug trafficking organization that U.S. officials fear has spread into scores of American cities.

In Operation Xcellerator, federal, state and local law enforcement officials in the U.S. worked closely with authorities in Mexico and Canada to arrest more than 751 people on narcotics-related charges, and seized more than 20 tons of narcotics, a Justice Department official said.

Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. is expected to announce more details at a news conference today. The operation comes amid growing concern that the Sinaloa Cartel and other Mexican crime organizations are out of control and threaten the stability of Mexico and towns on the U.S. side of theborder.

New Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the Obama administration is considering swarming the border with agents and possibly U.S. military support.

New Director of National Intelligence, Adm. Dennis C. Blair, told the Senate Intelligence Committee recently that "The corruptive influence and increasing violence of Mexican drug cartels impedes Mexico City's ability to govern parts of its country."

    MULTIMEDIA GALLERY
SHARE YOUR THOUGHTSA recent State Department travel advisory warned U.S. citizens about the perils of travel in Mexico, likening the shoot-outs among cartel factions to "small-unit combat." The U.S. National Drug Intelligence Center thinks that Mexican cartels maintain drug distribution networks or supply drugs to distributors in at least 230 U.S. cities.

Federal sources say Operation Xcellerator was unveiled, at least in part, to address growing concerns and accusations that some senior elements of the Mexican government are aiding elements of the Sinaloa cartel or selectively going after its competitors, allowing it to grow into one of the most powerful and deadly crime organizations in Mexico and on the U.S. side of the border.

Major corruption arrests in Mexico recently showed that elements of the cartel had paid senior officials in the Mexican attorney general's office to give it a heads-up about impending enforcement actions.

The Justice Department said today that the Sinaloa Cartel "is responsible for bringing multi-ton quantities of cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana from Mexico into the United States through an enterprise of distribution cells in the United States and Canada."

"The Sinaloa Cartel is also believed to be responsible for laundering millions of dollars in criminal proceeds from illegal drug trafficking activities," the Justice Department said, adding that individuals indicted in the cases are charged with a variety of crimes, including engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise by violating various felony provisions of the Controlled Substances Act, conspiracy to import controlled substances, money laundering and possession of an unregistered firearm.

To date, Operation Xcellerator has led to the arrest of 751 individuals and the seizure of approximately $59.1 million in U.S. currency, 12,535 kilograms of cocaine, more than 16,000 pounds of marijuana, more than 12 pounds of methamphetamine, about 8 kilograms of heroin, approximately 1.3 million pills or 500 pounds of Ecstasy, about 120 kilograms of MDMA powder, more than $6.5 million in other assets, 149 vehicles, three aircraft, three maritime vessels and 169 weapons.

The 21-month investigation began shortly after the culmination of Operation Imperial Emperor, an investigation that resulted in the indictment of Victor Emilio Cazarez-Salazar, who is believed to be a command-and-control leader within the Sinaloa Cartel, a federal law enforcement official said. Cazarez-Salazar remains a fugitive.

More than 200 federal, state, local and foreign law enforcement agencies contributed investigative and prosecutorial resources to Operation Xcellerator, the Justice Department official said.

U.S. arrests 755 in Mexican drug cartel raids

U.S. arrests 755 in Mexican drug cartel raids
DEA nets Sinaloa suspects in 120 cities; drugs, planes, boats, cars seized

updated 2 hours, 21 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Federal agents have rounded up 755 suspects in a wide-ranging crackdown on a Mexican drug cartel operating inside the United States, Attorney General Eric Holder announced Wednesday.

The sweep against the Sinaloa cartel culminated in a series of Drug Enforcement Administration raids overnight and early Wednesday that led to 52 arrests. In recent months, the DEA and other agencies have staged raids in 120 cities across the country that led to the 755 arrests.

"International drug trafficking organizations pose a sustained, serious threat to the safety and security of our communities," Holder said. "As the world grows smaller and international criminals step up their efforts to operate inside our borders, the Department of Justice will confront them head on to keep our communities safe."

The Justice Department said that as part of the 21-month-long investigation, DEA and other federal agents had seized $59 million in U.S. currency; 12,535 kilograms of cocaine; more than 16,000 pounds of marijuana; more than 12 pounds of methamphetamine; approximately 8 kilograms of heroin; approximately 1.3 million pills or 500 pounds of Ecstasy; approximately 120 kilograms of MDMA powder; and more than $6.5 million in other assets, including 149 vehicles, 3 aircraft, 3 maritime vessels and 169 weapons.

At a press conference announcing the arrests, Holder also suggested that re-instituting a U.S. ban on the sale of assault weapons would help reduce the bloodshed in Mexico, where last year 6,000 people were killed in drug-related violence.

U.S. officials have a responsibility to make sure Mexican police "are not fighting substantial numbers of weapons, or fighting against AK-47s or other similar kinds of weapons that have been flowing to Mexico," Holder said.

    Crime syndicate widely spread
DEA Acting Administrator Michele Leonhart said the raid showed the tentacles of the crime syndicate had spread far across the United States, not just to major cities like Washington and Los Angeles, but to quiet, smaller communities like Stowe, Iowa, which the cartel allegedly used as a conduit to funnel drugs around the country.

Leonhart said the Sinaloa cartel has become one of the largest organized crime operations in the world.

The overnight roundup by DEA and state and local police included arrests in California, Minnesota, and the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C.

"We successfully concluded the largest and hardest hitting operation to ever target the very violent and dangerously powerful Sinaloa drug cartel," said Leonhart. "From Washington to Maine, we have disrupted this cartel’s domestic operations — arresting U.S. cell heads and stripping them of more than $59 million in cash — and seriously impacted their Canadian drug operations as well.

"DEA will continue to work with our domestic and international partners to shut down the operations of the Sinaloa cartel and stop the ruthless violence the traffickers inflict on innocent citizens in the U.S., Mexico and Canada," she added.

Kidnappings, killings and other violence related to the cross-border drug trade have escalated as heavily armed gangs battle for turf on the doorstep of the U.S. narcotics market.

Hey this is great. And they got 59 million bucks? If they do this a couple times a week it could put a dent in the US deficit.
