Man Arrested For Multiple Santa Clarita Sex Assaults

Man Arrested For Multiple Santa Clarita Sex Assaults
Officials: Man Has Been Deported Twice

    POSTED: 10:29 pm PDT September 13, 2007

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- A man wanted for two "related sexual assaults" and several other crimes in the Santa Clarita Valley has been arrested, authorities said Thursday.

Adrian Arriano, who officials believe was in this country illegally after being deported twice, was wanted for sexual assaults of two women that occurred on Jan. 6 and March 29, police said.

Arriano is also linked to the attempted sexual assault of a woman in her apartment in the 18800 block of Mandan Street in Canyon Country, said Sgt. Darren Harris of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Santa Clarita Valley Station.

Victims of the assaults shared their feelings of gratitude about the arrest at a news conference Thursday.

"It's hopefully going to be a start of a new chapter, because it's been very difficult to deal with," one woman said tearfully. "These guys are amazing, and I just want to thank them from the bottom of my heart."

Another woman, who managed to escape being assaulted, said her "heart goes out to the girls that did get a lot worse than me. I screamed, and that saved my life or a lot worse."

Arriano is not the suspect wanted in connection with the attempted assault in Santa Clarita last Thursday of a 17-year-old girl who was accosted as she got into her car at Oak and Kansas streets, Harris said.

In mid-July, alleged victim Erin O'Brien publicly criticized the sheriff's department for what she claimed was a delay in releasing a composite drawing of the suspect.

Sheriff's officials defended their actions, saying they didn't want to release the composite for fear of tipping off the suspect.

    Canyon Country Rape Suspect Arrested

    By Christi Anne Corpus
    Signal Staff Writer
    Friday September 14, 2007

A Canyon Country man suspected of raping two local women and attacking a third was arrested this week by deputies responding to a burglary call in Newhall, sheriff's officials announced Thursday at a news conference attended by the three women assaulted in the same Canyon Country neighborhood.

"When this call came in, the response was rapid, quick, and coordinated," said Capt. Anthony La Berge with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station. "We're very happy with the efforts put forth to get this individual off the street."

Adrian Arriano, 29, reportedly tried to break into a woman's second-story condominium on Ficus Street early Monday morning and ran from the condo after the woman woke up and called sheriff's officials.

Deputies responding to the scene surrounded the area, found Arriano hiding moments later, and noticed similarities between him and a description of the wanted rapist.

Detectives also noted that Arriano's method of trying to enter the condo through a window matched that of the wanted rapist. Furthermore, La Berge said that during interviews about the attacks that took place earlier this year, Arriano provided information that had not yet been released to the public.

Arriano lives in the general area surrounding the Canyon Country locations of the first two rapes, he added.

The first assault occurred early Jan. 6, when a 20-year-old woman was raped in her apartment in the 19000 block of Stillmore Street. On March 29, the same man raped a woman in her 40s at knifepoint in her home in the 19500 block of Four Oaks Drive, less than a mile from the first attack.

On June 26, Erin O'Brien - who lives near the intersection of Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road - was attacked in her bed by a man who entered her room through an open window. She was not raped. O'Brien screamed and fought off her attacker, and was able to provide detectives with a physical description of her assailant.

A common factor in all three attacks was that the women live close to a bicycle trail that runs along the Santa Clara River.

Although there was no forensic evidence linking O'Brien's attacker to the man who raped the other two women, investigators believed all three assaults were committed by the same person.

After a composite sketch was not released within two weeks after her attack, O'Brien publicly criticized detectives' handling of her case.

"I want to publicly apologize to Detective (John) Gill. I didn't understand the inner workings of the Sheriff's Department and I was very insulted that a picture didn't come out," O'Brien said during Thursday's news conference. "Now I understand the reasons why. Thank you."

"We had information at that time, leads that we had to follow up on. The release of that composite publicly may have driven him underground," La Berge said when asked about the station's decision to not release the sketch until weeks after the third attack. "Once those leads had been exhausted ... we felt 'it's time to get it out to the public.'"

The first two victims stood with O'Brien, Gill, and Deputy Stephanie Shrout, who detained Arriano, as La Berge announced his capture. The women spoke about their relief at his capture, but declined to give their names.

"I personally would like to say thank you so much to the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station for the perseverance in arresting and detaining this man and making sure this never happens again," the first rape victim told reporters.

The second rape victim called Arriano's arrest a "miracle" when she spoke in front of the Sheriff's Station.

"I didn't believe it could happen. It's hopefully going to be the start of a new chapter," she said. "It's been very difficult to deal with, but these guys are amazing. I just want to thank them from the bottom of my heart."

La Berge said DNA evidence from the rapes will be compared to Arriano's DNA, and results will be ready within the next few weeks. Officials believe Arriano is a twice deported illegal immigrant.

He will appear in a Santa Clarita courtroom on Sept. 26 for criminal proceedings.

"I feel so safe today," O'Brien told The Signal. "I opened my windows and doors, and said, 'Yes. They caught him.' I'm set free out of my cage."

Man jailed in rapes shaking `safest city'
    Suspect's bail: $1 million
BY PATRICIA FARRELL AIDEM Staff Writer

    Adrian Arriano

SANTA CLARITA - Two women raped at knifepoint in their homes in the dark of night stood by Thursday as sheriff's deputies announced they had arrested a man in the attacks that sent jitters through this city, long considered one of America's safest.

Adrian Arriano, 29, twice deported to his native Mexico, was arrested about 4:45 a.m. Monday, identified as a prowler who had tried moments earlier to break into a Newhall woman's apartment.

"We believe she could have been the next victim," sheriff's Capt. Anthony La Berge said at a news conference.

Arriano's knowledge of confidential details about the rapes in January and March and about a related case in June, when a woman fought off her attacker, was key in linking him to the crimes, La Berge said. DNA and other evidence is being processed, with results due in two weeks.

Arriano - also known as Andres Gomez - was formally charged Wednesday with a single count of burglary, pending further investigation, said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. His bail was increased from $50,000 to $1 million, with his arraignment set for Sept. 26.

On Thursday, all three women spoke briefly to reporters.

"Thank you so much to the Santa Clarita Sheriff's Department for their persistence for arresting and detaining this man so this will never happen again," one said.

Another thanked Detective John Gill and "the team that was so diligent in making this arrest happen. Hopefully, it's the start of a new chapter for me."

The third, a woman who lived in the same area of Canyon Country as the two rape victims, apologized for publicly criticizing deputies in July when they refused to immediately release a composite sketch of the assailant she fought off after he broke into her home.

The drawing was circulated to patrol deputies but not to the public because some leads were being followed and police didn't want their suspect to see it and "go underground," La Berge said.

All three women are willing to testify should the case against Arriano go to trial, Gill said.

Arriano was identified by the East Newhall woman as the man who tried early Monday to pry open a window to her second-story condominium, said sheriff's Deputy Stephanie Shrout, who spotted the suspect riding a bike and arrested him. Shrout was with several deputies who responded to the "hot prowl" call.

Deputies had been hunting for the Canyon Country rapist and saw that Arriano fit the suspect's description, Shrout said.

"A lot of people worked hard to piece this puzzle together," she said. "I live in this community, and it's an incredible feeling to help the people of your own community."

Gill showed relief Thursday. As lead investigator, he talked - sometimes daily - with the victims to keep them posted and let them vent. He gave them his personal cell-phone number and took their calls both on and off duty.

"You do take it personally," Gill said. "I do feel like I've had an anvil lifted from my chest."

On Jan. 6, a 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in her Canyon Country apartment by a man in a hooded sweat shirt who came in through an unlocked window and threatened her with a knife.

On March 29, a woman in her 40s was asleep when a man similarly clad entered through the kitchen window, climbed onto her bed, put a knife to her neck and assaulted her, the report said.

The second attack prompted sheriff's officials to warn residents to lock their windows.

The third woman told deputies she awakened about 3 a.m. June 26 to see a man's hands coming down over her face. The man held a knife and said, "Shut up, shut up; don't scream," she said in an earlier interview.

But the woman shouted and fought, and the man fled.

Suspected Rapist Held To Answer On 27 Counts

    Written by Carol Rock
    Friday, 18 April 2008

Suspect is reported to have been deported twice.

Adrian Guadalupe Arriano, who was arrested in Sept. 2007 on suspicion of rape, was held to answer by a San Fernando judge and is being held on $10 million bail.

Arriano was charged with 27 felony counts on Feb. 19, including burglary, robbery, assault, attempted murder and several charges of sexual penetration with a foreign object and forcible rape. Thursday’s action verifies that there is enough evidence to bind him over for trial.

During a press conference at the time of his arrest, Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Captain Anthony LaBerge said Arriano was believe to be an illegal alien and had been deported twice before.

Arriano is suspected in rapes that occurred in January and March and attempts in June and September, with the last incident resulting in his arrest.

District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said that Arriano’s next court appearance will be May 19 for a pre-trial conference. He is being held at Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles.
