9 men found in suspected Houston smuggling operation
4 accused of human trafficking are taken into custody

Responding to a complaint about gunshots, Harris County sheriff's deputies found nine people believed to be held against their will in an east Houston home Saturday morning.

Deputies were called about 7:40 a.m. to the 14000 block of Hillsboro near Woodforest and Barbara Mae, where they discovered what appears to be a human smuggling operation.

"We found three pistols, a rifle and bookkeeping," that indicate the victims, believed to all be El Salvadorian men, were being held captive, said Lt. John Legg, spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

"They were, however, in semi-good health — not kept in a dungeon or anything but not able to leave at will, either," Legg added.

Four alleged traffickers were taken into custody. All are U.S. citizens, Legg said.

The undocumented immigrants were taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials
