In a
statement released on Thursday, U.S. Border Patrol agents confirmed that a 9-year-old girl drowned while attempting to enter the United States by way of the Rio Grande River.

According to the
release, “U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to Del Rio Sector’s Marine Unit rescued two migrants attempting to cross the Rio Grande, Mar. 20.” The agents came across three migrants who were “stranded on an island on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande River. Agents found the individuals and immediately began administering first aid while transporting the migrants to shore. Two of the three migrants regained conciousness, a mother from Guatemala and her three-year-old child from Mexico.”

The agents attempted to save the life of a 9-year-old child from Mexico before handing her off to the Eagle Pass Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services. The statement confirmed, “The child remained unresponsive and was pronounced deceased by medical professionals.”

According to the
New York Post, officials stated that the two children were Mexican nationals, and the mother was from Guatemala.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this small child,” said Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Austin L. Skero II in the release. “During these hard times our agents remain resilient, and I am extremely proud of their efforts to preserve human life.”

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection release states that “Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agents have rescued over 500 migrants attempting to illegally enter the country” since the beginning of the Fiscal Year 2021, October 1st.

The New York Post reports that this is the third drowning of a Mexican migrant to be reported at the border in less than two weeks. “Last week, two migrants perished near the Texas border town of Laredo,” per the outlet.

The surge of migrants at the border has created a crisis for the Biden administration, with many people focusing specifically on the influx of children and unaccompanied minors attempting to enter the country.

The Daily Wire reports
:

There are an estimated 7,700 children in the care of the Department of Health and Human Services at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to Newsweek.

The Daily Wire reported Monday that an internal leaked document from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed that nearly 1,000 child migrants have been kept in border detention facilities for longer than 10 days, which is far longer than the 72-hour maximum amount of time children are supposed to be housed in Customs and Border Protection (CBP) custody.

The crisis, however, has gone largely under the radar in the mainstream press until this weekend via leaked images. The Biden administration has reportedly put what’s effectively a “gag order” on Border Patrol agents with the media, according to sources. The Biden administration has denied the “gag order” reports.

Fox News
reports that a group of Republican lawmakers visited the southern border this week, releasing photos and videos of what they experienced.

At a press conference, Republican Senator Ted Cruz from Texas said, “This is inhumane, it is wrong, and it is the direct consequence of policy decisions by the Biden administration to stop building the wall, to return to catch-and-release, and to end the stay-in-Mexico policy.”

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) tweeted photos from the United States side of the Rio Grande, saying, “The inflow has gotten so bad, @CBP [U.S. Customs and Border Protection] has put arrows on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande directing immigrants to the processing facilities. Here is a picture of immigrants who just crossed the border following the arrows.” Thillis also tweeted a photo of babies, who he says “had been handed over by smugglers.”

The Biden administration is moving to create more facilities for the increase in migrants at the southern border. CNN reports that it “is setting up two more emergency intake sites that combined will provide more than 5,000 beds,” and according to a memo sent to federal agencies by the Office of Personnel Management and obtained by Axios, the Biden administration is asking for more federal volunteers to help with the increase of unaccompanied minors, as well.
