Absconder Arrested by CBP Officers at Naco Port of Entry

(Wednesday, June 24, 2009)

Naco, Ariz. — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a woman after she had absconded from CBP officers in order to avoid inspection.

On Sunday, June 21 at approximately 1 p.m., CBP officers were screening traffic at the Naco port of entry when they came in contact with a 29-year-old woman identified as a resident of Avondale, Ariz. The woman was trying to remain anonymous as she attempted to make entry into the U.S. through the Naco POE as a passenger in a vehicle.

As the CBP officers identified all occupants of the vehicle it was discovered that on June 7 the Avondale resident had absconded from CBP officers at the Douglas POE in order to avoid inspection. It was discovered later, that the reason the 29-year-old resident of Avondale wanted to avoid inspection, was that the vehicle she was driving was a stolen rental.

The woman was assessed a penalty in the amount of $5,000 under 19USC 1581(d); a violation committed when an individual fails to stop as directed by any CBP officer.
