Illegal alien facing local drug charges

By Eric Kopp, Okeechobee News
An Okeechobee man is still in the Okeechobee County Jail under a $300,000 bond following his arrest on charges that he sold 55 grams of suspected cocaine to a confidential informant.

Rigoberto Trujillo, 24, S.W. Third St., Okeechobee, was arrested Feb. 5 on charges of trafficking in cocaine, the sale of cocaine and possession of cocaine with intent to sell.

He was arrested by the Okeechobee Narcotics Task Force after a confidential informant allegedly purchased the substance from the illegal alien. An Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) arrest report states Trujillo is in the United States illegally.

That same report states that on several occasions Trujillo was called on a cell phone and an order for cocaine was placed with him. On Nov. 27, 2006, the confidential source reportedly met with Trujillo at a specified location. The informant walked over to Trujillo, who was in a white Ford Mustang, and bought a substance that was later field tested and indicated a positive result for the presence of cocaine, stated the OCSO report.

However, when the suspected cocaine was weighed it was 8 grams short of the agreed-upon amount, continued the report. The source then called Trujillo again, and the two agreed to meet at another location, added the report.

The source, who was being monitored by members of the task force, then drove to the new location. Trujillo showed up a short time later in the white Mustang and reportedly gave the informant the additional 8 grams of suspected cocaine.

Investigators then followed the informant to an agreed upon site where the suspected cocaine was turned over to them and field tested.

The OCSO report goes on to state that the substance has since been sent to a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) laboratory where it was analyzed. The laboratory has confirmed the substance to be cocaine.
