The ACLU will be keeping a close eye on Mesa Thursday as the sheriff carries out his latest crime suppression sweep.

Dan Pochoda with the ACLU says the sheriff's previous sweeps in Phoenix and Guadalupe have been "acts of grandstanding."

He says this venture into Mesa is more of the same. "Yes, definitely, there's no question that the sheriff is picking out areas with a large percentage of Latino population. Maricopa County has a large percentage and the results are creating an unnecessary fear."

The sheriff says his deputies don't racially profile people and he doesn't expect troubles from protesters in Mesa.
