Report Cites an Atmosphere of Ethnic Hatred in Suffolk County

    By KIRK SEMPLE

An environment of racial intolerance and ethnic hatred, fostered by anti-immigrant groups and some public officials, has helped fuel dozens of attacks on Latinos in Suffolk County during the past decade, says a report issued Wednesday by the Southern Poverty Law Center, an organization that tracks hate groups around the country.

When I saw "Southern Poverty Law Center", I immediately stopped reading. They have no credibility among middle Americans.

Until they stop illegal immigration legal immigrants will suffer, Once they get serious about enfoceing the laws and deport illegals people will stop looking at all others as being illegal....

They also need to get back to quota's of how many can come in from one certain country, that is diversity.....you flood a country with millions who refuse to assimilate and the problems will continue, people don't want to feel like they are in a foreign country in their own towns.

Its the American people who should live in fear, because of these people coming over the border illegally, and killing Americans by drinking and driving, child molesters running around raping children and women.
Stealing from tax payers, though welfare, and not only that the ACLU, backing these monsters. We the American people are haveing to put up with it because if not we are RACIEST. I am just so sick, it also burns me up.

Absolute failure to report illegal immigrant on American citizen crime in the same area. Of course, in their minds, the only definition of hate crime includes a Latino as victim. Nothing about brown on black or white crime anywhere.

Personally, if I were so terrified, I would move.

"Dozens" of attacks in 10 years? Oh Puh-lease! Let's talk about the thousands of attacks on Americans by illegal aliens every year!

This outfit profits greatly from illegal immigration and are a laughable source.

Report Finds Suffolk County A Hotbed For Hate

Report Finds Suffolk County A Hotbed For Hate

Church Vandalism The Latest In String Of Disturbing Bias Incidents Targeting Hispanic Community On Long Island

    Jennifer McLogan
port says hate, especially against the Latino community, has been running rampant in Suffolk County for years.

A disturbing new report issued Wednesday describes Suffolk County as a hotbed of anti-immigrant violence. The report comes a day after a Latino church in Patchogue was targeted with signs of hate.

Police say a window was broken, and hateful, anti-Latino notes were left Tuesday night at the Iglesia Evangelica Refugio de Salvacion in Patchogue. The Hispanic pastor his son discovered the papers scrawled with the messages early today. "White people rule here," the notes said.

"There's a God out there who does justice and who can fortive people," said Carlos Sanchez, the pastor's son.

Ironically, the church is located directly across the street from where the "Patchogue 7," a gang of white teenagers, allegedly out "MOD EDIT jumping," beat and stabbed to death Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero 10 months ago.

"I'm totally shocked right now," said Joselo Lucero, the victim's brother. "It's right next my brother's place where he died. And three or four weeks ago there was another incident."

The incidents, including four hate crime arrests last week, come amid the release of a scathing report outlining a widespread violent anti-immigrant climate in Suffolk County.

"Essentially what we found is that there is a very pervasive atmosphere of both fear and violence," said Mark Potok, Director of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

For 10 years, the center reports, political leaders and anti-immigration activists here have demonized Latino immigrants, and the police have appeared indifferent to their plight – allegations strongly denied by Suffolk's Hate Crime Task Force.

"I've been in charge of the hate crimes unit for the last 11 years and I'm telling you right now that we do respond to every call," said Suffolk Co. Police Det. Sgt. Robert Reecks.

Still, the report concludes that the Latino community feels terrorized and targeted.

"I've been spit on, I've been hit, I've had garbage thrown at me," said Sister Margaret Smyth of the North Fork Spanish Apostolate.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy, who has been accused by some of fostering a climate of intolerance said in a statement: "We can all agree that any violence against a fellow human being cannot and will not be tolerated."

Latino Activist Reverend Alan Ramirez wants healing to begin with change at the top.

"Demand resignation of the commissioner of police and perhaps Mr. Levy can think about doing the same," said Ramirez.

The report recommended politicians stand up to hatred, schools promote tolerance, and police become better trained in recognizing bias. It also singled out several former county legislators and a militant anti-immigrant group. Both allegedly spread bogus data claiming Latino immigrants were terrorists

Southern Poverty Law Center says Suffolk County executive fuels hatred

    BY Corky Siemaszko
    DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Suffolk County's chief executive has been branded the "enabler in chief" of anti-immigrant violence by a civil rights group in a report out today.

The Southern Poverty Law Center charges that County Executive Steve Levy has engaged in "verbal immigrant-bashing" since taking office in 2003 and fueled hatred by proposing county cops "be empowered to detain Latinos solely on suspicion of being undocumented immigrants."

Levy also supervised raids on 11 homes in Farmingville that resulted in the eviction of 200 day laborers and their families, the group says.

When immigrant rights advocates protested the raids, Levy derided the activists as members of a "lunatic fringe."

Levy also dismissed as "Communists" and "anarchists" critics of Mayors and Executives for Immigration Reform - a group he co-founded that "promotes immigrant-cleansing ordinances," according to the center's report.

After an Ecuadoran immigrant, Marcelo Lucero, was murdered in Patchogue by a teen gang "out to hunt Mexicans," Levy "minimized the significance of the hate crime charge," the group charged.

Levy - whose paternal grandfather was a Jewish immigrant from France and whose maternal grandparents were Catholics from Sicily - did not address the Law Center's charges directly.

"I know I speak for all of the good, law-abiding people of this county in denouncing all acts of crime and violence against all persons," he said in a statement.

"Hopefully, this group can assist in the efforts we began several months ago to establish programs to foster greater acceptance in our communities."

After the Lucero slaying, Levy insisted there was no connection to his policies, saying it was not a "question of any county policy or legislation," but "a question of bad people doing horrific things."

But Levy was also caught telling a group of businessmen that the fallout from the Lucero murder was like "the discomfort of undergoing a colonoscopy," according to newspaper accounts.
