New, heavy duty fencing along Douglas border

New, heavy duty fencing along Douglas border

    Posted: Oct 11, 2011 3:19 PM

TUCSON - Crews are busy erecting a new, stronger, taller pedestrian fence along the border in Douglas.

Work began last week to replace about 6 miles of fence, as part of U.S. Customs and Border Protection's ongoing efforts to strengthen the security of the Southwest border in Arizona's Tucson sector.

Crews are replacing "landing mat" fencing that was put up originally in the early 1990's with bollard fencing that's 18 feet high.

CBP says the new fence will provide a deeper, more robust below grade foundation in areas susceptible to erosion, making it significantly more difficult to breach.

The project should be completed by March2012.

"This fence project is a critical component to enhancing the safety and security of not only Border Patrol agents, but the community as well," said Tim Sullivan, Patrol Agent in Charge of the Douglas station.

CBP has completed roughly 650 miles of pedestrian and vehicle fence along the Southwest border out of the 652 miles mandated by Congress.
