SAN DIEGO -- Latino activists are calling the House Judiciary Committee hearing on the impact of illegal immigration a sham.

The hearing, which focused on the cost of illegal immigration in terms of education, health care, law enforcement and federal benefits, is one of a series being held nationwide at a time when the Senate and House are deadlocked over immigration laws.

Republican James Sensenbrenner, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, said the Senate bill amounts to amnesty.

However, Democrats dismissed the hearings as an election-year ploy and at a news conference opposing the hearings, California State Sen. Denise Ducheny said undocumented workers shop in American stores and pay taxes on their purchases.

She also said that many undocumented workers have Social Security deducted from their paychecks even though most will never get a benefit check.

Pro-immigration supporters also came out against the hearings and argued that undocumented immigrants are an integral part of the U.S. economy; a labor force that builds houses, harvests crops and then cooks and serves in local restaurants.

Melissa Daar with People For The American Way called the hearings a sham because there is no public comment allowed.

``The hearings are really nothing more than a publicity stunt meant to stoke the fears of undocumented immigrants,'' Daar said.

What part of "illegal" do the Democrats not get

I would like to know how "many" is many? What percentage of them pay SS? Where are the stats on that and how could you prove/disprove it? Heck, we're not even sure how "many" are in this country!!!!

Hmmm, and for these reasons the American people are supposed to find illegal immigration is justified? Murderers, theives, child molesters, etc. also pay taxes on goods purchased from American stores and have social security deductions come out of their paychecks. Should we accept their behavior too?

Law breakers are law breakers, no matter how many purchases they make from stores or how much of their income is payed to the Social Security Administration!

I forgot to also point out that some of those illegals are paying in SS because they are using someone else's SS# illegally!!!!
