ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Community leaders and Hispanic activists are gathering in Alabama to help organize the state's immigrant community with the ultimate goal of repealing the state's tough crackdown on illegal immigration.

About 30 advocates from the Southeast and Arizona began a 3-day meeting Thursday in Albertville to work with members of the state's immigrant community. More than 35 activists and leaders from around the state are expected for sessions that focus on coping with provisions of the new law and calming fears over its toughest sections.

Participants say they eventually hope to repeal the law, which already has been partially blocked by federal courts.

Carlos Garcia came to Alabama for the meeting from Arizona, which passed a tough law before Alabama lawmakers acted. He says such laws are spreading and can't go unchallenged.
