U.S. Marshal found dead in Mexico, UPDATED

U.S. Marshal found dead in Mexico

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal authorities say a deputy U.S. marshal wanted for allegedly stealing a government shotgun has been found dead in Mexico.
A spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service says Deputy Vincent Bustamante was found dead Wednesday in Ciudad Juarez.

Bustamante had been a fugitive since March 18 when he failed to show up for a court date in El Paso, across the border from Ciudad Juarez. He was placed on modified duty status after a pawnbroker called to report Bustamante had pawned a government shotgun.

A law enforcement official says Bustamante was found with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.

It has been ugly in America way to long. We have got to secure our borders.

Put the military bases along them.... double fencing,

No trucking into American, forget NAFTA...

ICE get busy on the interior with employers, raids and enforcement of immigration laws.

Local police in all 3,000 districts in America get busy, too.

as usual, we are not being told something,....

Like how he could have been working for the US and then crossing over the river and working for the drug cartels

Deputy US Marshal found dead of gunshot wound in Juarez canal

JUAREZ, Mexico -- A deputy U.S. marshal who was shot to death in Juarez was wanted in the United States, according to court documents.

The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that the body found in a Juarez canal on Wednesday was that of 48-year-old Vincent Paul Bustamante, a deputy U.S. marshal assigned to the El Paso office.

Chihuahua state police said that Bustamante died of a gunshot wound to the head.

At the time of his death Bustamante was on administrative leave. Bustamante was wanted for failure to appear in court on charges of criminal theft of public property, according to Jeff Carter, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service.

According to federal records obtained by the ABC-7 I-Team, Bustamante was arrested on the theft charges March 2. He was accused of selling six government handguns, three government shotguns and a pair of government binoculars without authorization.

The charges required that Bustamante's weapon, credentials and badges be retained by his supervisor outside of work hours, Carter said.

He entered a plea agreement and then was supposed to appear in court on March 18. The judge then issued a bench warrant on March 19.

The U.S. Marshals Service would not comment on the circumstances surrounding Bustamante's death. They are working with Mexican authorities and the FBI to determine what occurrred.

Though Bustamante was on leave at the time of his death, FBI officials said they have opened an assault on a federal officer case, which is a routine investigation anytime there is an assault or death of a federal agent.

Bustamante was a 17-year veteran of the Marshals Service and a former officer with the El Paso Police Department.

According to Chihuahua state police, about 9 a.m. investigators found Bustamante's body in a canal near Camino Escudero and Manuel Gomez Morin streets. The body was found with an ID from the U.S. with the name Vicente Paul Bustamante.

Firefighters pulled the body from the canal. The victim was wearing a white T-shirt, blue shirt, blue jeans, black belt, white socks and black sneakers.

Stay with ABC-7 for more on this developing story.
