Surprise police stopped the van, driven by Adrian Zacarias, 33, of Los Angeles, for a traffic violation. Upon approaching the van, police observed that the van seemed overloaded and that some of the passengers were lying across the floor of the van.

The eight passengers told officers that they had paid Zararias to smuggle them to a location in California, police said. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials were summoned to the scene, where they then took custody of the eight undocumented persons.

Zacarias was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail on eight counts of Smuggling of Human Beings, a class 4 felony.
