After Speech, Aides Scramble To Cover Bush's 'Amnesty' Slip
After Speech, Aides Scramble To Cover Bush's 'Amnesty' Slip
Wednesday, June 27, 2007; Page A03
If there is one thing President Bush has been clear about regarding the immigration bill before the Senate, it is that the measure does not amount to amnesty. More than most people, Bush knows that "amnesty" has become a radioactive term.
But as the Senate prepared to resume discussion of the bill yesterday, Bush inadvertently unleashed the slur on his own bill. Worse, he did it during a speech intended to give a final push to the measure.
"You know, I've heard all the rhetoric -- you've heard it, too -- about how this is amnesty," Bush told supporters of the bill at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. "Amnesty means that you've got to pay a price for having been here illegally, and this bill does that."
Say what?
Before long, his aides were working to repair the damage, and even went so far as to issue a rare retraction of the president's words.
"Earlier today, in speaking about comprehensive immigration reform, President Bush misspoke," press secretary Tony Snow said in a statement e-mailed to reporters. "This has been construed as an assertion that the comprehensive immigration reform legislation before the Senate offers amnesty to immigrants who came here illegally. That is the exact opposite of the president's long-held and often-stated position."

My father raised us that there is no such thing as "one little lie" because, you always have to lie to cover for that one, and on like that, pretty soon, you get so wrapped up in all the lying that you will get caught as you will start to forget what you lied about in the first place and slip up, then the real truth will come out and all _____ will break loose!!!!
So it seems that Mr. Bush has done exactly what my father said will happen when you lie just once, it will come back to bite your......well you know!"In the beginning of a change, the Patriot is a scarce man, Brave, Hated, and Scorned. When his cause succeeds however, the timid join him, For then it costs nothing to be a Patriot." This fool Bush is such a joke. What would our founding Father's think of such an idiot? They would think we were idiots for allowing Bush to hold the office of President.

Bush is such an idiot that he can't even lie properly.
This is amnesty. The only question I have is 'why'? Why are we talking about legalization now? Why must we make a decision in X number of days? Why are senators trying to pass bills they've never read? Why is a president going against the wishes of 80% of his country? Why are we running our county the way Mexico wants it to be run? Why are we subverting our own sovereignty like it was something worthless? I could continue.
I know the businesses want cheap labor and the politicians want the votes, but this reasoning is laughably short-sighted. When the illegals are made legal, they aren't going to vote for John Kerry or Trent Lott...they'll vote their own people into office. And the businesses...we already have China producing everything in this country anyway. Unless the chicken farmers of America have unusually powerful sway, I just don't understand why. The few advantages we might gain (I can't even think of many partial advantages) must surely be offset by the obvious flaws and weaknesses of this bill.
I'm just trying to understand why. This entire sequence of events has been insane. We are watching the fundamental breakdown of this country's government. Checks and balances are out the window."We have decided man doesn't need a backbone any more; to have one is old-fashioned. Someday we're going to slip it back on." - William Faulkner
