After trying to flee from ICE agents in Leominster, man pleads guilty to illegal reentry after deportation

The Mexican man who led federal agents on a car chase in Leominster a year ago will serve one year in prison, after pleading guilty to a charge of illegal reentry after deportation.

Eduardo Alvarez, 32, was at the wheel of car that rammed into a vehicle driven by an agent of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

He was apprehended the morning of Feb. 16, 2022, after agents traced him to a Leominster residence on North Main Street. He was spotted leaving the address in an Audi, with agents soon attempting a traffic stop.

"Officers then attempted to stop Alvarez by positioning their vehicles in front and behind the Audi," according to a summary of the case by U.S. Attorney Rachael S. Rollins, whose office prosecuted the case. "Alvarez accelerated and struck the front vehicle, with the ICE officer still in the driver’s seat.

"Alvarez then drove off traveling through a red light into oncoming traffic, forcing other vehicles including law enforcement onto the side of the road before stopping at his own residence, where he attempted to hide from officers for approximately 90 minutes before surrendering."

The sentencing Thursday, in U.S. District Court in Boston, followed guilty pleas by Alvarez in September.

Besides illegal reentry, he was charged with forcibly assaulting, resisting or impeding a federal officer engaged in the performance of official duties.

Alvarez was previously removed from the U.S. in 2009 and 2011. In 2010, he was convicted of illegal reentry into the U.S., according to Rollins' office.
