Agents arrest 29 during Camp Pendletn immigration work audit
Agents arrest 29 more during Camp Pendleton immigration work site audit
SAN DIEGO ---- Immigration agents arrested 29 foreign nationals today who are employed by a Lakeside business that provides construction workers to the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, authorities said.
The arrests of 28 Mexicans and one Honduran stemmed from a continuing illegal immigration audit of the Oceanside military base, but authorities said it wasn't known whether any of them had ever worked at Camp Pendleton.
"What we have been able to piece together is that none of these 29 have been working recently on the base," said Michael Unzueta, special agent in charge of the San Diego regional U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency.
Lauren Mack, spokeswoman for the immigration agency, said federal agents have arrested 98 employees out of 94 companies reviewed since the work site audit started late last year at Camp Pendleton.
The review is part of a national effort targeting illegal workers with access to places that might be vulnerable to terrorist attacks. In addition to military bases, they include nuclear plants, airports and seaports.
Officials said seven of the 29 Standard Drywall Inc. employees arrested today have criminal records that include convictions for narcotics and firearms violations.

Who is in control?
It is bad enough when the government turns a blind eye to employment of illegal aliens but is worse when they are employed on DOD installations and have prior criminal convictions. But then again if a criminal background was an impediment to government employment there would be no Senators and no President.
