TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The U.S. Senate has confirmed the nomination of a federal judge to replace John Roll, 1 of 6 people killed in the Jan. 8 Tucson mass shooting.
The Senate on Monday confirmed federal Magistrate Judge Jennifer Guerin Zipps' nomination as a judge in federal court in Tucson.
Roll, who was the chief federal judge in Arizona, was appointed by President George H.W. Bush in 1991. He was 63 when he was killed in the shooting, which also injured 13 people, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
The 46-year-old Zipps was appointed to the federal bench in 2005 after working in the U.S. Attorney's Office for several years.
Court officials say the Arizona district sees the third highest criminal caseload in the nation, driven by illegal immigration and smuggling.
