Border agents arrest Mexican sex offender near Hidalgo

Border Patrol agents arrested a Mexican sex offender last week near Hidalgo.

Agents arrested 34-year-old Daniel Angel Elizondo-Arce on Thursday, according to the federal criminal complaint against him.

"The defendant claims to have illegally entered the United States on July 28, 2016, near Hidalgo, Texas," according to the criminal complaint. "Record checks revealed the defendant was formally deported/excluded from the United States on April 5, 2016, through Laredo, Texas."

Elizondo is a moderate-risk sex offender, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety registry.

In December 2002, Elizondo was convicted of sexual assault of a child, according to the registry. Elizondo's victim was a 13-year-old girl.

In May 2006, Elizondo pleaded guilty to arson, a second-degree felony, and failing to register as a sex offender, a third-degree felony, according to Hidalgo County court records.

Border Patrol charged Elizondo with illegal re-entry. He remains in federal custody.
