Hundreds of people gathered yesterday outside the White House, calling for stricter immigration laws and chanting such messages as "no more amnesty" and "protect our borders."

The rally was organized by the Dustin Inman Society, a nonpartisan group that educates the public and elected officials on the consequences of illegal immigration and unsecured borders, according to the group's Web site.

"Thank you," said group Director D.A. King. "They surely heard that."
The group is named after Dustin Inman, a 16-year-old killed in a car accident involving an illegal alien in 2000.

Gonzalo Harrell-Gonzalez, who was driving the other car, was in the United States illegally but had used his Mexican birth certificate and a consular ID card to obtain a North Carolina driver's license. Charged with the car-crash fatality, Mr. Harrell-Gonzalez has not been seen since he left the hospital.

The rally coincides with the Federation for American Immigration Reform's five-day "Hold Their Feet to the Fire" event in the District. Former San Diego Mayor Roger Hedgecock, now a Southern California talk-show host and frequent guest host on the Rush Limbaugh show, is a co-organizer.

More than 30 radio hosts are scheduled to broadcast this week from Capitol Hill.
The rally yesterday featured roughly 15 speakers including T.J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council.

"We certainly are a nation of immigrants," he said. "Much more importantly, we are a nation of law," so the U.S. must allow only legal immigration.

"Amnesty was a huge mistake," said Mr. Bonner, who thinks more than 20 million illegal aliens have been allowed to live in the United States. "We [also] need to go after employers who are hiring illegal aliens."

Albert F. Rodriguez, chairman of the You Don't Speak For Me group from Scottsdale, Ariz., cited national statistics that illegal aliens are killing more people in the United States each day than American soldiers are dying in Iraq.

Among the hundreds of signs yesterday were: "Thank you Border Patrol," "We Are America," "Don't Employ Illegal Aliens" and "Illegal Aliens Are Criminals."
