Agents Seize Steroids, 6 Tons of Marijuana; Arrest Felon

    February 10, 2012

Edinburg, Texas ─ U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley Sector seized more than 12,000 pounds of marijuana, more than 450 vials of animal steroids and arrested a convicted felon over the past four days.

Rio Grande City agents followed fresh footprints into the brush near Garceño where they found nearly 500 pounds of marijuana hidden in a trash pile.

Agents assigned to the Rio Grande City Station netted one of the largest loads Thursday near Garceño. The seizure occurred when agents were searching a brushy area and found nearly 1,400 pounds of marijuana hidden beneath plastic tarps. The marijuana has an estimated value of more than $1.1 million.

Rio Grande City agents made another significant seizure that same day when they followed fresh footprints into the brush near Garceño. The footprints led the agents to a large trash pile, where they found nearly 500 pounds of marijuana hidden among the garbage.

The animal steroids were seized Thursday when agents responded to a call of a possible group of illegal aliens near Fronton. When the agents arrived at the location, they found the steroids, which have an estimated value of more than $11,000, and saw several people running south toward the Rio Grande.

Additionally, agents arrested an illegal alien near Fronton, who has been convicted of voluntary manslaughter. The man, who is a national of Mexico, will be processed accordingly.

Additional, seizures from Monday through Thursday brought the total estimated value of marijuana confiscated to more than $10 million. The marijuana and animal steroids were turned over to the proper authorities for further investigation.

To report suspicious activity, call the Rio Grande Valley Border Patrol Sector’s toll-free telephone number at (800) 863-9382.
