MOBILE COUNTY, Alabama --
Mobile County sheriff’s deputies arrest their first illegal immigrant since Alabama’s controversial immigration law took effect about a month ago.

Orsoto Gaona, 27, was arrested Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 10. Gaona was driving a truck hauling roughly 160 pounds of marijuana, according to investigators.

The marijuana, wrapped in electrical tape and covered in grease and coffee to mask the smell, was hidden under a fake truck bed.

Gaona gave officers a New Mexico driver’s license, but investigators later determined he is in the country illegally.

Gaona will not be charged under the state’s new immigration law, instead he will face tougher federal drug charges, according to Sheriff Sam Cochran.
