Estimate to deport all illegal immigrants now $135B

Estimate to deport all illegal immigrants now $135B
    December 3, 2010

Back in 2007, a U.S. senator asked ICE's then-Assistant Secretary Julie Myers to estimate the cost of finding and deporting all of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. According to the New York Times, Myers pegged the price tag at $94 billion.

Now that the illegal immigrant population in the U.S. has declined by about 1 million, the cost has somehow increased significantly, to $135 billion, according a new estimate from the Department of Homeland Security, prepared in response to questions from Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

So DHS is saying essentially that the cost estimate increased by about 30 percent in three years, while the undocumented population declined by roughly 8 percent? Interesting math. Not that most people think deporting all illegal immigrants is a realistic idea. Even Newt Gingrich said this week it didn't make sense.

The estimate was requested as part of the Congressional inquiry into DHS' dismissals of pending immigration cases, which we've reported on previously. In the letter to the Senators, DHS still doesn't come clean about the criteria it has used in reviewing cases for dismissal, pointing to a small pool of recipients described in an Aug. 20 memo who had U.S. citizen relatives.

The only problem is that the memo was published after the mass dismissals had already started. And several sources have confirmed the dismissals include illegal immigrants not covered by the memo, people without U.S. citizen family members. If you check out this data tool from TRAC at Syracuse University, you can see huge spikes in case dismissals (also known as "terminations") in Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Los Vegas, Arlington, Bloomington and Oakdale this year.

A spokesman for Sen. John Cornyn made it clear that the senator was not pleased with the contents of DHS's letter. "DHS misconstrues the purpose for our request and fails to respond to our specific concern that ICE is dismissing removal proceedings against some criminal aliens," the spokesman said in a statement.

Cornyn's spokesman said the senator is looking forward to meeting with ICE director John Morton to get some more details.

If I'm not mistaken $135billion is what it cost' this country every year for how many years now? In tax payers money. The math seems pretty simple.
Let's see Hundreds of billions minus 135 billion="NO DEFICIT!"
