A protest by opponents of Alabama's tough new immigration law is under way right now outside Gardendale's First Baptist church, where the law's main sponsor, state Sen. Scott Beason, worships.

Aboout 80 protesters started their demonstration at 8:30 this morning at Kelly Ingram Park in downtown Birmingham, the scene of many of Alabama's historic civil rights protests and incidents.

The demonstration then moved on to Beason's church about 10 this morning. Services are still going on, but congregants are expected to begin leaving the church soon, where they will be met by the protesters.

The Rev Frankin Tate, a protest leader, tells protesters he hopes Beason has a change of heart and that he and other legislators change the "evil and cruel" law.

Beason left after services and did not talk to any of the protesters. Reached on his mobile phone, Beason said he was at worship services when the protest began and that he would have no comment on the demonstration.
