Alabama lawmakers overwhelmingly pass law similar to Arizona’s SB1070

On Tuesday, the Alabama state House of Representatives passed a bill which would give state and local law enforcement the authority to investigate a detainee’s immigration status as well as require businesses within the state to use the E-verify system for potential employees.

The measure will also make it a felony for an illegal alien to register to vote, and will make it easier to deny public services to illegal aliens.

The bill which was sponsored by Rep. Micky Hammon (R-4th District) cleared the House by a vote of 73 to 28.

The vote was largely along party lines with most of the Democratic Representatives opposing the measure.

In a heated exchange on the House floor, Rep. Hammon exclaimed: “We cannot allow Alabama to become a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants.â€
