E-Verify for vendors is a 'modest' step, but expert warns of errors
Getting a job with a Huntsville city government contractor just got a little more complicated.
Starting Jan. 1, city vendors will be required to screen prospective hires using the federal government's E-Verify system. The City Council approved the change with little discussion Thursday night.
Councilman Bill Kling, who pitched the new rule, called it a "very modest proposal" to try to deter illegal immigration in a way that won't get the city sued.
"This is about the best we can do," he said before the vote. "We're not going to be a test case. We're not going to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax money trying to defend something in court."
Kling noted that two lawyers - City Attorney Peter Joffrion and Mike Fees, the city's outside expert on immigration law - helped draft the policy.
Madison County, Decatur and Albertville already require most vendors hired under competitive bid laws to use E-Verify.
The free online system allows companies to verify the employment status of prospective hires by submitting names and Social Security numbers to the Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security.
But Tyler Moran, employment policy director for the Los Angeles-based National Immigration Law Center, said the E-Verify database is riddled with nearly 18 million errors. That means many people's job applications won't match government records.
Social Security officials estimate that database errors could cause 3.6 million workers a year to be misidentified as ineligible for employment, Moran said Friday.

Re: LOL
Could be the guesstimation of 'TYPOS' that would require reentering info correctly.

Most problems with E-verify are solved well within the period before the mandatory discharge. Most illegal aliens leave soon after the discovery of a problem. It is likely much fewer illegal aliens will apply for a job with a company using E-verify.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

TOTAL BULLS***
Why can we do better with the DMZ between the Koreas?
Why are we the only country that can make a reusable spacecraft, but not get illegals out of our country.
NO POLITICAL WILL
