DECATUR, AL - Decatur City leaders are considering more laws to deal with illegal immigration.
The city already has an ordinance requiring companies which do business with the city to verify all employees are authorized to work in the United States.
The new ordinance goes after illegal aliens in their homes.
The new law would effect those living in rental properties, according to Councilman Gary Hammon.
"It just says that you can't have over two adults per bedroom. It's not just an illegal alien thing, it's good for health and safety too, because it's not just illegal aliens that abuse this," said Hammon.
Hammon says his proposal is based on a similar one in Albertville.
After a notice, he says occupants could face fines of up to 500 dollars per day.
"We don't really have a tool to for community development or the building department to keep people from having 27 people in an apartment or 3 bedroom house," said Hammon.
However, Hispanics think it will hurt them, legal or not.
"It's not fair for Hispanic families, because Hispanic families are big," said Luz Mana Gonzalez.
She says sometimes an aunt or uncle stays with the family to take care of children while parents work.
"Most of the kids, they live with their families, I don't know, until they marry. If they live with them 25 years or even 30 years they still live with their family, so I think it will be difficult for them," said Gonzalez.
Hammon says local governments need to take more responsibility for helping deal with their illegal immigrant problem.
"The federal government is really not doing anything and the state's hands are tied by the democrats down there, they would love for illegal aliens to be able to vote," said Hammon.
Hammon says he wants feedback from department heads, the hospitals, and the education system.
Then, he wants to introduce the proposal as soon as possible.

It is a health and safety issue, as well as a code enforcement issue. Twenty seven people in a 3-bedroom house will not work, especially with a home that has only two bathrooms. I would guess about six or eight cars in the driveway, and unless the landlord has stipulated in the lease exactly who pays for what, that landlord will probably be losing money, as well as inspiring rabid anger from the neighbors for the round-the-clock noise and, etc., etc., etc.
