Debate over immigration bill in Alabama heats up
By Sam Rolley

CULLMAN — A proposed immigration bill sponsored by Rep. Mickey Hammon, R-Decatur, that has already once been revised, could be re-examined by legislators later this month.
House Bill 56, which takes an approach very similar to the highly controversial immigration bill recently passed in Arizona, will give law enforcement agencies more power in seeking and apprehending illegal immigrants. The bill will require that any illegal immigrant convicted of a crime be transferred to the custody of federal immigration or border officials.
Among other provisions of the bill are changes to the law that make it illegal to transport or harbor an illegal immigrant and a mandate that all businesses use E-Verify, an electronic federal program, to ensure that new hires are legal citizens.
