MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- An Alabama Senate committee has approved a bill to crack down on illegal immigration.

The Senate Fiscal Responsibility and Accountability Committee voted unanimously for the bill that would require all workers in Alabama to have a state-issued identification card by 2010.

It would also require all state agencies to verify the citizenship status of everyone 14 and older who applies for state or federal benefits.

The vote came several hours after the House Judiciary Committee held a public hearing on 10 bills aimed at controlling illegal immigration. Chairman Representative Marcel Black of Tuscumbia said the committee would vote on the bills Thursday.
