Alamance County’s food stamp program came under scrutiny Tuesday during a county Department of Social Services meeting, according to the Burlington Times News.

DSS Board member Caroll Wood said she wants a better explanation on how food stamp benefits are distributed through illegal immigrants.

Wood met with her fellow board members Tuesday and questioned why non-qualified aliens were included in the monthly food stamp recipient household report.

Almost 900 illegal immigrants who are heads of households in Alamance County reportedly received food stamp electronic benefit transfer cards monthly from April to June.

The county had not previously recorded how many illegal immigrant heads of households had received the cards until this year, the paper reported.

County food stamp program comes under scrutiny

GRAHAM — The county’s food stamp program came under scrutiny on Tuesday during an Alamance County Department of Social Services meeting.

Caroll Wood said she wants to see a better explanation provided in the county’s monthly Food and Nutrition Service report on how food stamp benefits are distributed through illegal immigrants.

Wood serves on the county DSS Board. She met with her fellow board members on Tuesday and questioned why non-qualified alien heads of households were included in the monthly food stamp recipient household report.

From April through June, 874 illegal immigrants who are heads of households in Alamance County received food stamp electronic benefit transfer cards monthly.

The county DSS hadn’t previously recorded how many illegal immigrant heads of households had received the cards until this year. Alamance County Commissioner Tim Sutton had asked Alamance County DSS officials to provide him with information about how many illegal immigrants were issued the EBT cards for food stamps to use for their children.

EBT food stamp cards are issued to illegal immigrants who have children who are U.S. citizens who qualify for the benefits. The county can’t issue the cards directly to those residents under 18, so they are issued to a heads of household instead.

From January through March, 878 illegal immigrants who are heads of households in the county received food stamp electronic benefit transfer cards monthly.

Wood said on Tuesday the food stamp report’s information was confusing and asked DSS officials to either take the information about illegal immigrants off future reports or leave the information in the report with better clarification.

Wood said she didn’t agree with current federal policy that requires the county to distribute the EBT food stamp cards to illegal immigrants. Wood said she realized the county couldn’t control how illegal immigrants as heads of households used the EBT cards.

County Commissioner Linda Massey, who also sits on the DSS Booard, said during the county DSS meeting that she doesn’t believe issuing EBT food stamp cards to illegal immigrants is fair.
