SANTA FE (AP) - The Bush administration remains hopeful that Congress, despite election year pressures, will agree on comprehensive immigration legislation this year.

US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Monday in Santa Fe that Bush officials haven’t given up. In fact, he says they’re still working hard to reach an agreement, though it could be difficult.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, a Democrat and the nation’s only Hispanic governor, says he believes Bush and Gonzales have taken the right position on immigration.

Richardson supports legislation that offers a path to citizenship for the millions of illegal immigrants living in the United States.

He says comprehensive legislation also should include additional resources, such as more agents and electronic sensors to tighten border security.
