Albright stumps for Clinton in C.B.
    TIM ROHWER , Staff Writer

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright does not like what's happening around the world.

"I've never seen the world in such a mess. It's a very hard time," she said during a visit to Council Bluffs Friday. "The next president has to be ready on Day 1 and from my perspective, Hillary Clinton is the best person to do that."

Albright was in town to campaign for the New York senator, a person she has known for a long time. In fact, they both went to the same college, though at different times.

It's important to choose the right person in next year's election to restore America's standing in the world, she said.

"Now, we have lost our reputation," Albright said.

The next president will have to face major problems, including the fact that America is not fighting terrorism appropriately and that there's an anti-democratic feeling in some parts of the world, she said.

Albright said she liked Clinton's response in a recent debate when she said, "We can't demand change, we have to work for it."

She described Clinton's performance on the Senate's Armed Services Committee as "hard working, concerned and assertive," and that she understands the tools of diplomacy, the combination of holding "sticks and carrots."

If the war in Iraq continues into January 2009, Clinton would begin troop withdrawal within 60 days, leaving some behind as a protective force, Albright said.

She likes Clinton's comprehensive reform plan on illegal immigration that includes employer sanctions on hiring illegals and having them earn a path toward citizenship. Clinton also knows the importance of helping to improve the economy of other countries because most people would prefer to live in the country where they were born, Albright said.
