Gov. Riley Pushing Immigration Reform

March 16, 2007

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Governor Riley has given Alabama lawmakers a package of bills aimed at dealing with illegal immigration.

He said the proposed legislation, filed Thursday, are an attempt to crackdown on illegal aliens who attempt to use state benefits.

One would require adults seeking a government benefit from a state agency to prove they are in the U.S. legally with a photo ID.

The second measure would require employers to take an oath that they don't hire illegals before they qualify for state grant money or state contracts.

The third bill would limit government commercial and professional licenses and permits only to those people who are in the country legally.
