Bank Of America Offers Credit To People Without SSNs

Critics Angry, Call For BOA Boycott

Critics are calling for a boycott of Bank of America and other financial institutions they claim are offering credit cards to illegal immigrants.

The controversial cards are being offered to people without Social Security numbers, many of whom are illegal immigrants.

The cards are issued regardless of credit history or immigration status. But, Bank of America said the cards are not targeted towards illegal immigrants.


"They're using credit cards, home mortgages to aid and abet, induce and encourage illegal aliens to both enter the United States and remain here unlawfully," said William Gheen, president of National Illegal Immigration Boycott Coalition.

"For many years, Bank of America and other banks have offered secured credit cards to customers who have checking accounts on the basis that allows them to build a credit history," said James Mahoney with BOA.

Citibank launched its program two years ago and Wells Fargo offers home mortgages to some immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least two years.
